Title : SC4 Event: Examining student learning through CTS and action research-27
Discipline : Science
Description :

This event is open only to SC4 teachers

Have you ever wondered how to use your classroom to research students’ misconceptions related to what you teach? Last year, a cadre of SC4 teachers did just that, and said it was one of the most significant professional learning experiences they have ever encountered!

Curriculum Topic Study (CTS) builds a bridge between state and national standards, research on students' ideas in science, and opportunities for students to learn science. Teacher action research is a classroom-embedded form of professional development used to examine teaching and learning. The goal is to take action to improve one’s own teaching practice based on an analysis of relevant data collected during the teaching and learning process.

This one-day retreat will share a classroom action research process informed by CTS - a powerful way for teachers to learn more about students’ misconceptions related to curriculum standards. During the summer, “Action Research Mentors” will support participants as they conduct a study to formulate a research question using CTS as the foundation for the work, and decide what data they will collect when classes begin in September. We will reconvene in the fall to analyze the data and connect the implications of the findings to the classroom.

Teachers will receive daily stipends for participation in the 1-day workshop and 3 days of summer study.
