| : Description: Whether it’s Cadillac Mountain in Bar Harbor, Mt. Katahdin in Baxter State Park, or Mars Hill Mountain in the town of Mars Hill, Maine is the first state in the United States to receive the morning’s sunlight. Humans are intimately connected to and dependent on light and whether natural or artificial, people have been coming up with creative ways to use energy to illuminate their environment for thousands of years. Lighting has certainly changed the way people live. It takes a lot of energy to light the modern world!
Teachers in Grades 4 and 5 are invited to join MMSA staff for a one-day workshop to experience the lessons in the Energy Lights Maine (ELM) curriculum. The ELM module contains lessons on circuits and electric light, conductors and insulators, electrical safety, generation of electricity, energy efficiency, and conservation. Teachers may preview the lessons at the curriculum’s companion website www.powersleuth.org. At this workshop, participants will receive a copy of the ELM curriculum, a $100 materials voucher to purchase the hands-on supplies teachers need to carry out the curriculum, and schools will be reimbursed for their substitutes. Lunch is included.
