Write Your Own Everyday Engineering Mysteries

REGISTRATION IS CLOSED FOR THIS EVENT

Develop your own short stories to engage students in solving authentic engineering problems specifically related to your school science curriculum. Featuring NSTA’s Everyday Science Mysteries series, this online facilitated workshop for K-6 teachers gives participants the opportunity to collaborate with others in bridging science inquiry and engineering while incorporating the science and engineering notebooks in the process. It is recommended, but not required, that teachers participate in the workshop with at least one colleague. Through online discussions and sample activities, teachers will learn new ways to elementary engineering opportunities for their students through the meaningful integration of science, engineering, science, and literacy.
The workshop will:

  • introduce participants to NSTA’s Everyday Science Mysteries series
  • explore how mysteries can be used to engage students in engineering design
  • familiarize participants with essential features of the engineering design process
  • consider the integration of key science concepts in featured ESM to engineer design projects
  • instruct teachers in the science and engineering practices
  • provide examples of how essential components of science and engineering notebooks and specific entries students make support their developing understanding of engineering design
  • guide participants through a practical application of the science and engineering notebook
  • engage participants in an interactive forum for building and sharing knowledge with colleagues in their school and in other schools
  • enhance participants’ ability to write their own engineering mysteries

Participants will receive a copy of ONE book of choice in the ESM series, (see below) a syllabus, a participation rubric, and materials for the discussions. Contact hours are awarded based on a participation rubric.
