PowerSleuth
Energy Education Curricula for Maine Students in Grades 4-8

Submit your application today to field test the PowerSleuth curriculum unit Energy Powers Maine in the fall of 2009. Maine science teachers in Grades 7-8 interested in field testing the materials are eligible to apply. This unit is the final component in a series of purposefully designed inquiry-based units, with the goal of teaching energy concepts to Maine middle school students. It is not required that teachers or their students have familiarity with the other PowerSleuth units ( or ) to participate.

Applications are due June 1, 2009.

Key features of the PowerSleuth curricula are:
• Attention to research-based findings related to energy topics, including commonly held understandings and ideas
• Alignment with National and Maine State Standards (2007 Maine Learning Results)
• Developmentally appropriate lessons
• Inquiry-based pedagogy and rich learning contexts
• PowerSleuth companion website www.powersleuth.org
• Relevance to Maine students
• Access to professional development training, educational resources, and access to an ongoing statewide support network

10 teachers will be selected for the field test and must agree to:
• Attend a one-day summer training on Monday, August 17, 2009 at the MMSA office in Augusta during which they will be introduced to the materials and feedback protocol
• Field test materials with students in the fall of 2009 and provide feedback by December 15, 2009

Field test teachers will receive:
• A $300 stipend for attending the August training and will be reimbursed for mileage and meals. Overnight accommodations the evening before the one-day training will also be provided, if necessary
• After the fall field test is completed and feedback is submitted, teachers will receive an additional $500 stipend

PowerSleuth curriculum materials have been developed with funding from the Maine Public Utilities Commission (PUC).
