Workshop registration costs will be covered by the SC4 project, and participants will receive daily stipends at all summer events.

(Grades 1-4) May 22, 2008, Augusta. This learning lab will provide a broad overview of systems, research on student learning related to systems, connection to the national science standards and the revised Maine Learning Results, literature connection, an instructional activity that will help your students construct understanding of systems, and materials to take back to your classroom.

Examining student learning through Curriculum Topic Study (CTS) and classroom action research or (Grades K-8) Augusta. Have you ever wondered how to use your classroom to research students’ misconceptions related to what you teach? Last year, a cadre of SC4 teachers did just that, and said it was one of the most significant professional learning experiences they have ever encountered!

This one-day retreat will share a classroom action research process informed by CTS - a powerful way for teachers to learn more about students’ misconceptions related to curriculum standards. During the summer, “Action Research Mentors” will support participants as they conduct a study to formulate a research question using CTS as the foundation for the work, and decide what data they will collect when classes begin in September. We will reconvene in the fall to analyze the data and connect the implications of the findings to the classroom. Teachers will receive daily stipends for participation in the 1-day workshop and 3 days of summer study.

(Grades K-8) July 28 – Aug 1, 2008, UNE, Biddeford. After all the time you spend helping your students enjoy science, isn’t it time you indulged in some fun hands-on learning for yourself? Attend the SC4 summer content institute for an engaging week of science led by UNE Professor James Vesenka. The institute will focus on learning about waves in our world and will explore important ideas about sound and light. Examples will be taught through inquiry-based laboratory experiences, and will combine adult-level content with applications that can be brought directly to K-8 classrooms.

SC4 Summer Showcase (Grades K-8) Aug 11 - 15, 2008, Hilton Garden Inn, Auburn. By popular demand, we are pleased to announce the following frequently requested offerings:

Writing in K-5 Science (Grades K-5) Fall 2008. Writing in science is much more than documenting experimental procedures and results. This workshop will introduce scaffolds that can support students as they learn to communicate in science and guide students into writing that helps them grow into scientific thinkers and learners.

Additional details and registration links for all events will be posted on the SC4 website as they become available.
