Biography
Janice Mokros (Jan) joined Maine Mathematics and Science Alliance as its Executive Director in September 2008. Jan is a developmental psychologist and mathematics educator. She directs the Maine Energy Education Future (MEEF) at MMSA, and is studying the impact of real-time monitoring on student's understanding of energy and graphing. Jan also chairs the Maine Science, Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics (STEM) Collaborative. Prior to coming to MMSA, Jan was a long time staff member at TERC, where she was an author of the curriculum Invesigations in Number, Data, and Space, and directed projects to bring math to science centers, zoos, aquariums, and after-school programs. Jan has developed activities, games, and a book for parents to help incorporate engaging math into their everyday family lives. She also has been involved in higher education as a professor and administrator. She launched San Francisco State University's Center of Science and Mathematics Education, which focuses on recruiting and retaining K-12 science and math teachers. Jan has two grown children and a corgi (Jordan). She and her partner Jim enjoy traveling, running, cross-country skiing, and backpacking.
